Wouldn't a simple NEWS entry solve this? And apart from that,... people
who already rely on this (i.e. existing installations) wouldn't
experience the change, as we don't simply overwrite modified
configfiles.

Well,... it's your decision :),  I've just read many "horror stories"
about issues and hard to track symptoms when using the embedded perl
interpreter and already stumbled over on such case myself.
I guess especially many plugins from sites like Nagios exchange are
likely not tested for it.
