Where do you think it's broken? Unfortunately, downloading and extracting all the MIBs from their corresponding RFCs really takes some time. These "XXX: ignored" messages are just a note of the MIB extract that not all MIBs included in a RFC have been extracted. In most cases this is because some IANA MIBs or example MIBs are included in an RFC or because of a particular MIB has been updated in a later RFC. I just wanted to updated my system with just a couple of packages and my decision did block the dpkg database for ages (until the process was finished). Imagine that happen on dist-upgrade from one to another stable release ... if one important system service was stopped by package upgrade and now libsnmp- base is fetching the whole RFCs and IANA docs, which take a lot, the service outage is not acceptable. Most of my dist-upgrades to lenny was faster than the MIB download. Even if gawk is installed, it is not guaranteed that it is the awk alternative (root may have changed it to, e.g., mawk). The most preferable alternative is that you change whatever it is to work on all awks: there are many good reasons to prefer mawk over gawk (such as speed). This has a number of problems: - As stated several times in the discussion leading to this change, libsnmp-base doesn't necessarily need these MIBs to function; only the command-line tools, and *possibly* other software using libsnmp-base that wants names rather than numbers, do. That would tend to lead to a "Suggests" at most from libsnmp-base. Prompting for installation proves quite intrusive by comparison, for something most users don't need. - It adds another prompt to installation which users have to answer, many of which won't necessarily have a clue about SNMP. A quick look at the reverse-Depends of libsnmp15 (which pulls in libsnmp-base) turns up hplip, openipmi, ifstat, and kolab-cyrus-common, any of which a user might install without any knowledge of SNMP. - It bypasses the packaging system by downloading and installing bits that don't get managed by the package manager. (This will prove even more painful if the data needs updating at any point.) Furthermore, it installs these bits to /usr. - It bypasses the dependency mechanisms of the packaging system. Software depending on libsnmp-base and needing the MIB files would fail if the user says "no", but nothing in the dependencies can express this. Furthermore, this also does an end-run around the requirement that software in main may not depend on non-free software, by simply omitting the dependency and letting things break. - It prompts the user to install non-free software. Previously, Debian has avoided and removed such prompts, notably the one in the initial installation asking whether to use contrib and non-free. I propose two alternative solutions, which I think would address all of these issues: 1) If the licenses of the MIB files permit (which as far as I can tell they do), package the MIB files in Debian non-free. Have libsnmp-base suggest this new package; packages in main may suggest packages in contrib or non-free, they just can't depend on or recommend packages in contrib or non-free. Other packages, like smi, can also suggest this package. Any package which actually requires the MIB files can depend on them (and move to contrib), if we can't fix it to avoid that requirement; packages which work fine without the MIB files but which could make use of them if present could suggest the package containing the MIBs. 2) If the licenses of the MIB files do not permit redistribution, create a package in contrib which unconditionally downloads and installs them, and treat that package as described in 1 above (Suggests from libsnmp-base, in particular). Really tempted to file this bug as "serious", but AFAICT it doesn't violate the *letter* of Debian Policy. I personally think we ought to change Policy to explicitly prohibit a package in main from offering to download non-free data at install time, though. Note that any package in main which depends (directly or indirectly) on libsnmp-base and needs the MIBs *does* violate Debian Policy. - Josh Triplett -- System Information: Debian Release: squeeze/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.31-1-amd64 (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages libsnmp-base depends on: ii debconf [debconf-2.0] 1.5.28 Debian configuration management sy ii gawk 1:3.1.6.dfsg-4 GNU awk, a pattern scanning and pr ii make 3.81-7 An utility for Directing compilati ii wget 1.12-1.1 retrieves files from the web libsnmp-base recommends no packages. libsnmp-base suggests no packages. -- debconf information: * libsnmp-base/download_mibs: false From ubanus at users.sf.net Sun Nov 22 18:00:35 2009 From: ubanus at users.sf.net (Jakub Wilk) Date: Sun, 22 Nov 2009 19:00:35 +0100 Subject: [Pkg-net-snmp-devel] Bug#557540: net-snmp: FTBFS with Python 2.6 Message-ID: <20091122180035.GA7940@jwilk.net> Package: net-snmp Version: 5.4.2.1~dfsg-3 Severity: important User: debian-python at lists.debian.org Usertags: python2.6 usr-local ftbfs Hello, Your package FTBFS with python-all-dev from experimental. The problem is I don't really know which package only needs libsnmp-base or libsmi2-common and which package needs the MIBs. I'm really into moving the MIB installation to a package in contrib. This package should probably depend on libsmi2 as smistrip does a better job than the script included in the net-snmp package. > - It bypasses the packaging system by downloading and installing bits > that don't get managed by the package manager. (This will prove even > more painful if the data needs updating at any point.) Furthermore, > it installs these bits to /usr. IMHO, the MIB base is intended to be dynamic. libsmi comes with a directory /usr/share/mibs/site which should be used for extra MIBs, e.g. to enable wireshark to dissect private OIDs (like Cisco ones) to its name. > 1) If the licenses of the MIB files permit (which as far as I can tell > they do), package the MIB files in Debian non-free. I don't think they do permit this. IIRC, the problem with RFCs and according to IETF with the MIBs as well is that modification is not allowed. Unfortunately, some older MIBs distributed as RFC have syntax errors preventing parsers to read them correctly. Further more, the SMIv1 based MIB trees depend on RFC-1212 and RFC-1215 which, in spite of their name, have *never* been distributed as RFC. Although these files can be found in various places, i never saw any license for these two files. > 2) If the licenses of the MIB files do not permit redistribution, > create a package in contrib which unconditionally downloads and > installs them, and treat that package as described in 1 above > (Suggests from libsnmp-base, in particular). With the new "fetch MIBS" system I am unable to use a build depend to satisfy the requirement. This really shows up when using pbuilder to build my package. libsnmp-base gets installed but the mibs do not get fetched. The same situation could happen if a user says no to the mib fetch or if the mib fetch fails. As it stands now I don't see any reliable way to build depend on libsnmp-base and have it actually provide the required mibs. Also, I would guess the debian autobuilders are going to be in the same situation as pbuilder. At a minimum, can the mibs be distributed in a non-free package? At least that would make it possible to satisfy the build dependency. Thanks, Troy -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... We could just package a non-free package from libsmi2 sources with those MIB (provided we do the license check). This would allow to ship MIB without downloading anything. We should just create a dummy package suggesting the non-free one and containing some note about the necessity to install the non-free package to get MIB. At least those: IANA-ADDRESS-FAMILY-NUMBERS-MIB IANAifType-MIB IANA-RTPROTO-MIB They are used by some from IETF. I don't know if there is a way to automatically retrieve them. That script is created at net-snmp build time and includes the CFLAGS that are used to build net-snmp itself (and which are then returned by 'net-snmp-config --cflags'). Now, net-snmp's CFLAGS include the output of 'perl -MExtUtils::Embed -e ccopts' (which is required for the embedded perl stuff), which, in turn, includes '-fstack-protector' on *some* architectures (presumably, on those that support that flag). So, in order to fix that, net-snmp-config should be included in some Arch: any package, so it's going to be built on all architectures and, hence, returns the appropriate CFLAGS for each architecture. Thus, reassigning this bug to net-snmp. I suppose, that libsnmp-dev would be the appropriate package for that. There are no packages in unstable that build-depend (according to build-rdeps) on libsnmp-base (or libsnmp15), so moving net-snmp-config to libsnmp-dev should not affect any Debian packages. Still, imho, a NEWS.Debian entry should be added to notify any other users. Right. However, those CFLAGS are not entirely random. The perl CFLAGS are required when using libnetsnmpagent according to #502806. I don't think it's reasonable to "filter" (e.g. remove -fstack-protector) those flags before adding them to the net-snmp CFLAGS. However, it would be nice to let net-snmp-config return different flags for e.g. libnetsnmp and libnetsnmpagent (see my follow-up to #502806). Also, it could be argued that perl should not include flags like -fstack-protector in the output of ccopts. I don't have a strong opinion on that, though.
