Since it is a problem that depends on an external issue (which version
of xorg you have), there really is no way to easily make it work on
etch.  Hopefully only a few people need to backport it to etch.  I
suppose a variable somewhere that could be set by people who want to
bakport it that takes care of enabling everything would be nice, but why
change the package just for that.

The thing is doing the diversion will only happen when the nvidia
package is installed.  If you later upgrade the xorg version, the nvidia
package won't know and hence can't change the diversion which is now no
longer required (and in fact breaks some systems).
