Module-assistant built nvidia-kernel OK and it installed OK.

I don't know what NVRM refers to but judging by /var/log/messages
(see below) I'm guessing that the problem was that I hadn't upgraded
nvidia-glx and nvidia-settings to match nvidia-kernel.
