Hi Geoff,

I tested a similar approach and my findings were that it breaks Xorg if
the nvidia driver is not available, e.g. because the user removed (but
not purged) it or he wants to test nouveau or nv or ... so it seemd to
cause more trouble than it solved.

Eventually a better approach would be to use debconf and ask the user
when he installs the driver for the first time and there is no
/etc/X11/xorg.conf, whether to install a minimal config there that
enables the nvidia driver. And if there is an xorg.conf already, to
display a note that manual action may be needed to activate the driver ...
