You should consider joining the DOG (Debian Octave Group) at
http://pkg-octave.alioth.debian.org.  Coincidently, I started to work on
the 2.1.71-3 release for sid during the last week (I am waiting for the
new libhdf5 packages, which transitioned to the new C++ ABI recently).
See the last SVN committed debian/changelog at:

In Debian sid with g++ 4.0.1-3, the only test that failed was
octave.test/arith/coth-1.m.
