It is just a conservative thinking.  We have the tradition in Debian of
ensuring smooth transitions.  Who knows about users who are still using
octave2.1 for whichever reason (old, non-3.0-compatible scripts running
batches, for instance).

We might change the description of octave2.1 and add a loud warning telling
that the package will disappear in lenny+1.

That said, if a majority of people here thinks we must drop octave2.1, I
will follow the decision.
