Which version of Debian, which version of Octave 2.1?

Ehm, version 5 is pretty unlikely, unless Georgia Tech has developed a
time travel device. At most, it's 3.0.0 which is the latest released
version. Anyway, was this software compiled by yourself (or by an
administrator) or is this a Debian package?

If you compiled it yourself, it should be included. If you installed a
Debian package, look for octave3.0-headers. Upon installation, it will
also pull in the necessary libraries.
