It is a good idea. I have changed the maintainership to reflect this.
The package is ready and available at (buildable with git buildpackage):
git://cnbisrv02.epfl.ch:443/pkg-mwrap.git

It just now requires a sponsor, and being marked as ready for upload in
changelog.

I have also request to join the Octave Group.
