Thanks for the suggestion. I definitely already want to add some 
autopkgtests at some point; a basic smoke-test of slapd would be 
valuable, and I'd like to test TLS functionality and even upgrades if I 
can figure out how.

I do like running the testsuite on buildds, though. It has uncovered 
issues on non-x86 arches (e.g. ppc, kfreebsd, hurd) in the past. I think 
I would only want to stop doing that if autopkgtests will actually run 
on multiple (ideally all) arches.

When I'm working on the package, I actually do most of my development builds with 
DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS=nocheck. (Of course I do make sure to run the 
testsuite locally before any upload.)
