Indeed. We got reminded that there is an open patch submission at 

   http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?msg=20;filename=mips_atomic_ops.patch;att=1;bug=489173

That patch was for 1.2.* but it should be applicable. Could you try to get
this into the right hands?
