FWIW I have a regression on amd64 (on Ubuntu) with Rmpi which segfaults. So
far the only main difference is ... that Ubuntu uses libtool 2.2.4.  So this
will help/

Sounds good. We do need to address these 'does not build' issues. And if it
requires a monster patch, so be it.
