openssl contains hardware support for various things, like
AESNI. I think they would like to add more HW support.

/dev/crypto is still not merged in the Linux kernel, so we can't
use it?

There is a netlink based crypto API for Linux instead. There
seems to be a patch available to create an engine that uses it,
which might be a better way forward on Linux?

I would prefer that upstream contains all the code, so I suggest
you try to get patches merged upstream.
