This bug report is to add the corresponding libssl udeb to allow for ssl support. As I've discussed with Cyril during DebConf15, I'm interested in seeing https support in the Debian's debian-installer (it's already available in Ubuntu's). In order to make this possible, we need as ssl library in the installer. wget in Debian links against gnutls, while it links against openssl in Ubuntu. I did the work to get a udeb out of gnutls, but the result is a) much larger than the equivalent from openssl b) linked against stuff that also has no udeb packages, which means both more work and even larger size. So, my current strategy is to build the wget-udeb against openssl. I've checked for license issues regarding openssl incompatibility with the GPL and I believe that there are no issues. The work for getting this support in Ubuntu was done a few years ago and Ubuntu has been carrying the diff since then. I've created a patch based on that work, I'll attach it after I get a bug number here. I've noticed that experimental has a soversion bump for openssl, so I created this patch against the version in unstable. If you want me to create the patch against the version in experimental, please let me know. -- Regards, Marga -- Cheers, Marga -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Which work specifically? I've already sent patches both for libssl and wget. These patches are based on the work done by Colin Watson for Ubuntu, the only thing I did was apply the changes to the latest versions in Debian. Is the work your colleague did significantly different from what was done in Ubuntu? Was it using openssl or gnutls? Are you missing any piece of support? I could look into forwarding that. > Ubuntu has been applying these patches for a few years and it works just fine. I'm interested in seeing this support also in Debian instead of having Ubuntu carry this difference unnecessarily. I believe other Debian users or Debian derivatives might be interested in having https support as well. As I mentioned, an alternative would be to use gnutls instead of openssl. I did the work to get the udeb for that, but I discarded it because the result was larger and with additional dependencies that would also require separate udebs. This means a much bigger initramfs, and as the condition mentioned by Cyril was that the size difference shouldn't be too much, I'd prefer to go with openssl as the resulting size diff is smaller. -- Cheers, Marga -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Since this will also need to go thru NEW, it think it makes most sense to have this as part of the other packages that changes names, but I'm waiting for the release team on when that goes to unstable. So I'm wondering how urgent this is. If I upload it to unstable now it might make it to testing faster. I have no idea how long the transition is going to take once it's uploaded to unstable. I guess I can figure out how to do this in experimental myself. I have reported it to the clamtk maintainer. The fix in message #57 works for me, ie: OPENSSL_ia32cap=0 clamtk I hope I'm not breaking any taboos by reporting an xubuntu issue on a debian fault report site. I thought it might be useful information to anyone trying to track the cause of the fault. Regards Tim -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL:
