[Pkg-opt-media-team] Bug#699186: dvd+rw-tools: growisofs, unformatted BD-R: Wrong estimate of available space for data

Package: dvd+rw-tools
Version: 7.1-6
Severity: normal

Hi!

I tried to burn some data on a BD-R. Growisofs formatted the disc but ran
out of space when writing the data. Using xorriso for the same set of
data revealed that through formatting the available space on the BD-R
shrank below what was needed for this set of data.

I assume that growisofs doesn't take the space needed for formatting/defect
management into account when examining an unformatted BD-R, resulting in a
botched burn.

The best solution would be to take this space into account when it
encounters an unformatted BD before formatting or at least examine the
available space (again) before actually writing the data.

I think not formatting by default, formatting without defect management or
additional command line options would be against growisofs's design idea
of getting the data onto disc easily and safely.

Since growisofs was moved to it's own package in wheezy/testing this might
affect that package as well.

Regards
Jens
