As an Etch user, I have installed a few packages from unstable, such as
svn-buildpackage, dh-make-perl, and lintian, since they install cleanly.
Without building my own backport of debhelper_6.0.0 (I don't see one
currently available), this change of debhelper version would require an
update of dpkg-dev, dpkg, libc6..

After an svn up, I can no longer build the packages I recently uploaded,
and I'm not too sure about allowing apt preferences to pull in a great
deal of changes to my stable OS. I suppose building in an unstable
debootstrap chroot is possible, but less convenient.

Just a "me too" on Julian's note.
