Thanks for your bugreport and the patch!

I looked at the package and found out two things:
* The warnings appear because "use warnings;" was enabled in the last
  upstream release.
* The offending code is not from the upstream author but produced by
  a Debian patch ...

I'm working on fixing this bug based on your patch.
