I guess it should help you figure out basic usage.

If you're interested, I could set up a git repository of all available
revisions of gqview (using snapshot.debian.net), so that we have a basic
history of what happened, and that you then start hacking on it.

We're usually putting only debian/ under git, and I'm planning to put
any direct changes on the upstream sources in a given file under debian,
like debian/extra.diff or so. (As you probably already know, It's now
best practice to use a patch management system, like quilt or dpatch,
and to produce separate diffs under debian/patches.)

Feel free to subscribe to the mailing list in the meanwhile, and to
check the first mails we exchanged there (address and archives are
linked from the homepage).
