Hmm. Strange, I have been using a backport of Ubuntu's 
0.7~beta4-0ubuntu3 on etch[1], built and linked against libpano12-dev
2.8.3, without any evidence of a failed dlopen.

   - use libwxgtk2.6-dev instead of libwxgtk2.8-dev
   - downgrade libpano12-dev build-dep from (>= 2.8.4) to 2.8.3
