Would be nice to know why (since it might happen as well in other
environments, like buildds, but well, we'll find out in that case…).

Sounds sane. As said in a previous answer, I'm happy to move to
something that I can actually (understand|maintain|have pleasure to work
on).

Will probably implement that at the same time I tweak the udev thingy
(i.e. new upstream release, or find-time-and-rush-it-through-experimental.)
