I tried this (in fresh cloned git working directory from
https://anonscm.debian.org/cgit/pkg-phototools/checkit-tiff.git/), but
it fails with ff. error:

https://anonscm.debian.org/cgit/pkg-phototools/checkit-tiff.git
$ cd checkit-tiff
$ gbp import-orig --pristine-tar /tmp/checkit-tiff_0.1.1.orig.tar.gz
gbp:error: Repository does not have branch 'upstream' for upstream
sources. If there is none see
file:///usr/share/doc/git-buildpackage/manual-html/gbp.import.html#GBP.IMPORT.CONVERT
on howto create it otherwise use --upstream-branch to specify it.

Could you please explain where I am going wrong? The manual link is not
very helpful to understand the mechanism...
