fwiw, there are numerous known problems with gd2 in stable, mostly segfaulting 
with random corrupt images etc.  a few of these are also issues in unstable 
as well iirc.  

unfortunately the debian gd2 maintainer is more or less MIA.  i've been 
talking with the new upstream author for gd2 in the past month or so and 
there may need to be a hijacking of said package in the not too distant 
future...
