I'm running Gnome3 on Debian 7.8. The speaker icon in the taskbar was always muted when I logged in and would become initiated when I adjusted the volume slider. After some web based research, I installed the 'alsa-utils' package which pulled in the 'alsa-base' package also. Rebooted the system and speaker icon was normal with sound working flawlessly.
