It's responsible for doing queuing of Stored Configs along with a queueing daemon, necessary in larger setups. See {http://reductivelabs.com/trac/puppet/wiki/UsingStoredConfiguration#configuring-queuing-storeconfigs} for details. It should probably be included along with an option /etc/default/puppet to have it started automatically with puppetmaster on boot. -- Mark Bergsma Operations Engineer, Wikimedia Foundation From nigelk at google.com Thu Nov 5 19:26:09 2009 From: nigelk at google.com (Nigel Kersten) Date: Thu, 05 Nov 2009 19:26:09 +0000 Subject: [Pkg-puppet-devel] [SCM] Puppet packaging for Debian branch, master, updated. puppet-0.24.5-rc3-1464-g6ee1059 Message-ID: The following commit has been merged in the master branch: commit 6ee10593bf07d83d0c293c3085b586b609857074 Author: Nigel Kersten Date: Thu Nov 5 11:21:45 2009 -0800 Add puppetqd executable to puppetmaster deb diff --git a/debian/changelog b/debian/changelog index 0e52e78..29cb875 100644 --- a/debian/changelog +++ b/debian/changelog @@ -1,3 +1,9 @@ +puppet (0.25.1-2) unstable; urgency=low + + * Add puppetqd executable to puppetmaster package + + -- Nigel Kersten Thu, 05 Nov 2009 11:23:10 -0800 + puppet (0.25.1-1) unstable; urgency=low * New upstream release of 0.25.1 diff --git a/debian/puppetmaster.install b/debian/puppetmaster.install index 2aa4c15..8ba97cf 100644 --- a/debian/puppetmaster.install +++ b/debian/puppetmaster.install @@ -4,3 +4,4 @@ ext/puppetlast usr/bin debian/tmp/usr/sbin/puppetmasterd usr/sbin debian/tmp/usr/sbin/puppetca usr/sbin debian/tmp/usr/sbin/puppetrun usr/sbin +debian/tmp/usr/sbin/puppetqd usr/sbin -- Puppet packaging for Debian From apollock at debian.org Thu Nov 5 19:27:55 2009 From: apollock at debian.org (Andrew Pollock) Date: Thu, 05 Nov 2009 19:27:55 +0000 Subject: [Pkg-puppet-devel] [SCM] Puppet packaging for Debian branch, master, updated. puppet-0.24.5-rc3-1465-g47455c3 Message-ID: The following commit has been merged in the master branch: commit 47455c39d757d507a45d1b4ef783564d17593db2 Author: Andrew Pollock Date: Thu Nov 5 11:27:26 2009 -0800 Added the closes part to the changelog for #554624 diff --git a/debian/changelog b/debian/changelog index 29cb875..01709f8 100644 --- a/debian/changelog +++ b/debian/changelog @@ -1,6 +1,6 @@ puppet (0.25.1-2) unstable; urgency=low - * Add puppetqd executable to puppetmaster package + * Add puppetqd executable to puppetmaster package (closes: #554624) -- Nigel Kersten Thu, 05 Nov 2009 11:23:10 -0800 -- Puppet packaging for Debian From dak at ftp-master.debian.org Thu Nov 5 19:38:29 2009 From: dak at ftp-master.debian.org (Archive Administrator) Date: Thu, 05 Nov 2009 19:38:29 +0000 Subject: [Pkg-puppet-devel] Processing of puppet_0.25.1-2_i386.changes Message-ID: puppet_0.25.1-2_i386.changes uploaded successfully to localhost along with the files: puppet_0.25.1-2.dsc puppet_0.25.1-2.diff.gz puppet_0.25.1-2_all.deb puppetmaster_0.25.1-2_all.deb Greetings, Your Debian queue daemon (running on host ries.debian.org) From installer at ftp-master.debian.org Thu Nov 5 20:07:07 2009 From: installer at ftp-master.debian.org (Archive Administrator) Date: Thu, 05 Nov 2009 20:07:07 +0000 Subject: [Pkg-puppet-devel] puppet_0.25.1-2_i386.changes ACCEPTED Message-ID: Accepted: puppet_0.25.1-2.diff.gz to main/p/puppet/puppet_0.25.1-2.diff.gz puppet_0.25.1-2.dsc to main/p/puppet/puppet_0.25.1-2.dsc puppet_0.25.1-2_all.deb to main/p/puppet/puppet_0.25.1-2_all.deb puppetmaster_0.25.1-2_all.deb to main/p/puppet/puppetmaster_0.25.1-2_all.deb Override entries for your package: puppet_0.25.1-2.dsc - source admin puppet_0.25.1-2_all.deb - optional admin puppetmaster_0.25.1-2_all.deb - optional admin Announcing to debian-devel-changes at lists.debian.org Closing bugs: 554624 Thank you for your contribution to Debian. We were having a bit of chat with Mathias Gug from Canonical's Ubuntu Server team. Ubuntu is getting all onboard with Puppet integration, and they want to move Puppet from Universe to Main, but there's a few issues their security team has with the Puppet packages as they currently stand. Specifically: 1) The Puppet client daemon starts automatically on install Given this reaches out and talks to a host called "puppet" this was deemed as a security issue (Not unreasonably so IMO). Given that a Puppet client generally requires some configuration before it's usable, I don't think it's unreasonable to not try to start Puppet automatically. I was thinking of setting START=no in /etc/default/puppet to address this. 2) Permissions on /var/lib/puppet/state Upon inspection, I'm not quite sure what the problem is here. The Ubuntu modification just explicitly sets the owner and group. I don't have a vanilla Ubuntu install handy to compare the ownership of this directory with what the Debian package creates. Additionally: Ubuntu is also shipping the test suite as a separate package, and fixing the Rakefile so that it's runnable. I think the desire was to be able to run the test suite on a local installation of Puppet. I thought we could roll all of these in with the package splitting that Stig was proposing to do. Unrelated, Luke seemed to think that Puppet 1.0 would be out within the timeframe that Ubuntu 10.04 is going to feature freeze. Whether we want to race to ship that in Debian and Ubuntu within that timeframe is another question though... regards Andrew -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... We are currently installing some of those bits, but not all of them. Right now we are installing: 1. puppetlast in puppetmaster.install 2. emacs/vim modes in debian/rules 3. logcheck in debian/rules We have talked in the past about breaking out the emacs/vim pieces and submitting them to the packages that collect and distribute those. I think we should do that. However, there are various other things in there that are useful, and I'd like to outline them below and propose to install them in different ways. I'm planning on doing the ones that I propose below, however, I'm interested in feedback, suggestions or disagreements before proceeding: ext/bin/sleeper --------------- comment from the top reads: # sleep indefinitely as a debug. I dont know what this is and unless someone figures it out, I would suggest we dont install it ext/dbfix.sql ------------- this supposedly will clean up and fix Mysql stored config databases. i'd suggest adding this to the puppetmaster package. perhaps as an example file? ext/extlookup.rb ---------------- this is a useful external data sources function, I'd like to have this installed, would only be useful on the puppetmaster, I'd propose installing it in /var/lib/puppet/lib/puppet/parser/functions/ ext/ldap/puppet.schema ---------------------- presumably this is a LDAP schema that some might find useful. perhaps install it in the puppetmaster package as an example? ext/module_puppet ----------------- comment from the top of the file says: # Run a +puppet+ script as a cfengine module. I'm not sure where this would be useful, but perhaps in the puppet package as an example? ext/puppetlisten/puppetlisten.rb --------------------------------- comment from the top of the file reads: # this is a daemon which accepts non standard (within puppet normal intervals) puppet configruation run request. my guess here is that this would go in puppet.examples ext/puppetlisten/puppetrun.rb ----------------------------- comment from the top reads: # this scripts calls a client and ask him to trigger a puppetd run uses # SSL for communication based on the puppet infrastructure the client # allows access based on the namespaceauth. my guess with this one is that it belongs in puppetmaster.examples ext/puppetstoredconfigclean.rb ------------------------------ this script is useful to clean out, from the database, the stored configuration information for a particular node. you want to do this when a node has been decommissioned, if you dont then it will continue to show up on your munin/nagios/ssh or whatever stored configuration generated nodes ext/puppet-test --------------- comment reads: # Test individual client performance. Can compile configurations, describe # files, or retrieve files. This appears to be a puppet.examples install. ext/rack -------- this contains the pieces needed to run puppetmaster as a rack-based application. for example with passenger/mongrel etc. I propose to install this as a puppetmaster.examples set of files ps - I just uploaded a backport of the 0.25.1-2 package to backports.org, now that it has migrated to testing. --- End forwarded message --- From nigel at explanatorygap.net Thu Nov 26 20:58:07 2009 From: nigel at explanatorygap.net (Nigel Kersten) Date: Thu, 26 Nov 2009 12:58:07 -0800 Subject: [Pkg-puppet-devel] Fwd: packaging the ext bits In-Reply-To: <1259264944-sup-6881@riseup.net> References: <1259264944-sup-6881@riseup.net> Message-ID: <5b088d4b0911261258i21324f41q98d0d920418a5d69@mail.gmail.com> On Thu, Nov 26, 2009 at 11:49 AM, micah anderson wrote: > Hi folks, > > There is a handful of useful goodies in the upstream ext/ directory. I'm a bit worried about using the sql scripts, as I'm not sure whether they've been updated for the newer schema changes? puppet-test is good, and extlookup is good. We should absolutely include those, same for the vim/emacs stuff. I'm unsure why we'd use the puppetlist/puppetrun scripts? Wouldn't you just run puppetd in daemon mode and use the 'real' pupperun? I have had quite a bit of problems migrating to 0.25.1 WRT to the stored configs, resulting in me needing to kill a lot of nodes in the database, I've been wondering if this dbfix script would have solved that or not. > puppet-test is good, and extlookup is good.
