Ben,

the r2x00 is a disaster for quite a number of people (see for instance 
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/%2Bsource/linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24/%2Bbug/134660), 
me included.
The only driver which (barely) work on my hardware is 2.0.4.
Personally, I think it will be wise to keep the legacy drivers for a while as 
an alternative for those people that simply can't use (hopefully yet) the 
rt2x00.
