the problem is that dpkg-buildpackage finds the correct key and asks me
for a passphrase, but then says it couldn't sign the package after I
typed it in. When signing a plain file manually using gpg, there's no
problem.

Nothing other than that I thought it would be more appropriate. But
your suggestion is better - I'll change that.
