I realise that since I've been sitting on the packaging task for months
I'm not really in a good position to say this, but the advantage of Assets
as an extension is that it exists and is usable now.

It's interesting to hear that you're planning on making Assets core for
4.4. Will that be schema-compatible with the out of tree version? Do
you have a timeline for relese of 4.4 yet?

For users of Debian stable, packaging Assets to then deploy via
backports is still likely to be a useful option even when 4.4 is
released, because 4.4 is a bigger jump and won't be supported in a stable
Debian release for some time.
