We do not plan to update the userspace side for Debian as part of our
security update. The reason is that:
  It is not necessary to fix the security issue
    - and -
  These patches are not currently incorporated in the next release of

Yes, I do understand that there is missing functionality - i.e., unix
extensions won't fully work because you can't avoid passing these
mount options to the kernel.

However, since these patches are not upstream, this behavior is
consistent with the next release of Debian (etch). And, since unix
extensions weren't supported, this is also consistent with the
previous Debian release (woody). (Note that this is my first look at
smbfs, so if you think I've overlooked something here please let me
know..)

If these patches do get accepted upstream (or at least by the Debian
samba package) then we can revisit the situation for sarge and look at
doing a stable update for samba. I just noticed that there is a samba
maintenance team now, so I've cc'd them. At this point, I think it is
up to them to decide how to proceed.
