I just achieved to test it.
contrary to smbfs, it seams to be compatible with a linux samba server :)

sudo mount -t cifs   '//127.0.0.1/part' /tmp/smb --verbose
-oro,unicode,iocharset=utf8,credentials=./creditetials,domain=GR14

Yes, this seams to be necessary for unicode compatibility.

As debian etch default to locale UTF-8, I assume cifs will rapidely
replace smbfs.

However, it seams a bit more difficult to configure.
