I would instead suggest:

  Please specify the workgroup for your system.  This setting controls which
  workgroup your system will appear in when used as a server, the default
  workgroup to be used when browsing with various frontends, and the domain
  name used with the security=domain setting.

since "appearing" in a workgroup is something that only happens to servers.

I think this is cumbersome, and would prefer that we pick one name (SMB or
CIFS) to use when referring to the protocol.

Well, I guess this is all for post-lenny anyway, right?  I don't think I
object to discontinuing support for plaintext passwords after lenny, given
that even samba in lenny will not act as a plaintext client without an
override.
