Hello and thanks for looking into this.

I'm afraid that I'm not in a position to try the unstable version of samba.  I do believe that I already had logging set to level 5 and found these messages in the server log which seem to get to the heart of the problem.  As you may have noted from my smb.conf I'm trying to keep the authentication scheme simple and use pam kept in sync with the system shadow database.

It my not be relevant, but I seem to have somehow gotten rid of (or never had on this server) an administrative user for the samba domain.  This is presumably my issue, but in case it bears on this crash..

/var/log/samba/cores/smbd/ is an empty directory

Can you try to get level 3 logs of the crash ?

Even better: would you be in position to try reproducing this with the version of samba in unstable (I understand that may be tricky if we're talking about a production server)?
