Not only smbclient but overall samba. The latest 3.2 version is 3.2.14

Still, this is Debian's policy to *not* upgrade upstream software
versions in the stable release. The main point is to guarantee
stability to our users.

You can read more about this policy and the underlying rationales on
the main Debian site.

Only release critical and some "important" bugs are fixed in the
stable release (we already had 4 new package releases since Lenny was
released).

Not in lenny.....unless the relevant issue is considered to be important
enough to deserve being integrated in a future release of packages for
lenny. What is that issue? Is there a relevant upstream bug number?

Still, as a service to our users, we, (volunteer) maintainers of the
official Debian packages for samba, do build packages of the most
recent upstream versions.

You can get them by using:

deb http://pkg-samba.alioth.debian.org/packages lenny-backports/

in your /etc/apt/sources.list file

IMPORTANT NOTICE: These are *unofficial* and, for instance, are not
supported security-wise. These packages are provided on a "very best
effort" basis and we do not support bugs they could bring to your
system and we do not guarantee timely updates, particularly for
security issues. You've been warned..:-)
