It is changeable from the outside. See the smb.conf file. If
you want it programmatic, do it via the registry
configuration. Or do you mean libsmbclient must offer an
API? You can alway deliver an IP address to libsmbclient and
implement the name lookup yourself.

That's something gvfs should implement IMHO.
