Quoting Luk Claes (luk at debian.org):

All backports we (or should I say "I") did are using ucf:

etch-backports on backports.org are 3.2.5-4
lenny-backports on bpo are 3.4.7~dfsg-2

etch-backports on pkg-samba.alioth.debian.org are 3.2.12-1 with
   packaging derived from 3.2.5-4
lenny-backports on pkg-samba.alioth.debian.org are 3.2.15-1 with
   packaging derived from 3.2.5-4
lenny-backports-latest on pkg-samba.alioth.debian.org are 3.5.2~dfsg-2

So, for me, it's OK to drop the ucf transition code and reference
files.
