[Pkg-samba-maint] Ubuntu mount.smbfs (CIFS) data loss issue: second opinion

Hello list,

Since I do not know, if you monitor Ubuntu bug reports and Launchpad activity, and since I believe, that the issue is quite grave, I want to ask you about your opinion to this bug report [1].

It seems, that when using mount.smbfs without some option (noserverino), mounting and filesystem access works without any errors or warnings, but due to circumstances not completely clear, files may vanish from directory listing. Since those files are not listed any more, backup or copy procedures miss them and the data might be lost. The software type and version of server is not yet known (some EMC storage appliance).

Could you please tell me,
a) if there are similar reports with recent debian samba tools also (my versions are kernel 3.2.0, smbfs 2:5.1-1ubuntu1)?
b) if this is a server problem (server reporting serverino support, but fails to implement it correctly) or a client problem (client fails to handle correct serverino infos in wrong way)?
c) if you think, this might be a grave problem or one affecting just 1^-6 of total users?

Kind regards,
Roman
