Package: samba-common
Version: 2:3.5.6~dfsg-3squeeze6
Severity: normal

This bug still exists. So, please:

a) Fix the bug, and stop to ignore the "private dir" configuration option.
   (Although I think you're not willing to fix the bug, since you
   haven't fixed it for the last 8 (!) years...)

   It's totally ok to set the default path for private_dir according to FHS,
   but please don't kill the "private dir" configuration option.

b) or *at least* fix the documentation!
   e.g. in smb.conf(5), change

       private dir (G)

           This parameters defines the directory smbd will use for storing
           such files as smbpasswd and secrets.tdb.

           Default: private dir = ${prefix}/private

   to:

       private dir (G)

           This parameters defines the directory smbd will use for storing
           such files as smbpasswd and secrets.tdb.

           Default: private dir = ${prefix}/private

           In Debian, the private dir is fixed, and this option is intentionally
           ignored. If you need it (e.g. for qemu -smb), you have to compile
           samba yourself!
