The switch from /etc/init.d/samba to /etc/init.d/[ns]mbd would be
transparent for users, except if they're trying to call the init script
directly (as you point out). It's certainly *possible* to add an
/etc/init.d/samba wrapper (with no start/stop links in /etc/rc?.d) for
compatibility, if that's what we want.

However, I wonder if this isn't simply postponing the inevitable. If the DC
daemon is named 'samba', then having an init script named 'samba' which
doesn't launch that, and another init script with a different name which
does launch it, will be very confusing. Maybe if this confusion is very
short-term it's ok. Or maybe the guarantee we make is "/etc/init.d/samba
will always start the file and print services"?

Either way, as I've pointed out I think the actual split into nmbd and smbd
init scripts is necessary for compatibility with other init systems, for as
long as we'll be running these daemons. And we can figure out exactly what
to do with /etc/init.d/samba separately from this.

Do you want me to add an /etc/init.d/samba wrapper as part of this
conversion? Otherwise, I think my 'init-script-split-and-upstart-jobs'
branch in git is more or less complete now and ready for merging to master.
