After lots of asking around and searching, I also found this:

 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cups/+bug/990388

which is exactly the same issue reported against ubuntu.

The workaround in there -- namely, adding "use client driver = yes"
setting to smb.conf - lets smbclient (!) to work - ie, the above
`print' command succeeds, but windows clients still does not
work with the same 'access denied' error.

FWIW, the printing system used is BSD (lpr), but apparently it
isn't relevant since all print shares are configured explicitly
and the job submission is just at the beginning, so not really
relevant yet.
