Simply building the package with --with-mpi-compiler=mpicxx fixed the
problem.  Both kubo and highdim examples work now.  Version 1.5.3-6 of the
Debian package is now ready for release.  It is waiting for ftp-admin
approval in the Debian NEW queue (http://ftp-master.debian.org/new.html).
