The Ubuntu package appears to be an CVS snapshot from 20060823
(probably very similar to the same dated version in etch). More
bizarrely, I've been looking at ffmpeg SVN for the relevant header
(http://svn.mplayerhq.hu/ffmpeg/trunk/libavformat/avio.h?view=annotate)
and it looks like it's had that function signature from the beginning!
I did also find another bug report upstream to paraview
(http://www.paraview.org/pipermail/paraview/2008-July/008852.html)
which seems to indicate that there are other people having issues with
this (and that was on a Debian Etch machine).
