I personally think that any effort should be kept, no matter if the
package is distributed officially or not. But you are definitely right with
the 2.5G - that is far too much. To solve that, the debian-med group
only stores the debian folders and merges these with upstream. This helps
the archive a lot and should not render it overly difficult to tolerate
otherwise unmaintained packages.
