The point is: is it likely to be needed in situations where

Well, given thatboth packages can be installed separately, I think so,
but we should then have a dedicated NEWS.Debian for each package,
would be better.

No, I'm afraid it wasn't.

We should not provide PAM files for tools not using PAM. Regarding the
compilation with PAM, well, there are mixed opinions (see Steve
remarks about the PAMification of some utilities)
