Package: passwd
Version: 1:4.0.13-7
Severity: important

Hello,

I was wondering if a username like 'étoile' could be added so
I did:

# useradd étoile
#

Then checked:

$ grep étoile /etc/passwd
étoile:x:1003:100::/home/étoile:/bin/sh
$

Good ! But the home directory doesnt exit:

$ ll /home/ | grep toile
$

So i deleted it:

# userdel étoile
#

Then I remembered about the 'adduser' command:

# adduser étoile
adduser: To avoid problems, the username should consist of
letters, digits, underscores, periods and dashes. For compatibility with
Samba machine accounts $ is also supported at the end of the username
#

So looks like we have something inconsistent! I would expect useradd
to give an error message just like adduser does. Or adduser should not
give an error message ?
