Ultimately you both refer to Solar Designer's patch.

I can only add that Solar is quite known person [here],
see e.g. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_Designer,

and I personally would rather take his patch as a base
instead of implementing the same from scratch, probably
introducing bugs on my own etc. etc.

Also, I'll look what's there in NetBSD -- I saw _more_
options than DES, MD5 and Blowfish...

P.S. Sorry, Nicolas, I didn't have time to check your
patch that stops ceases linking unnecessary binaries
against libpam.
