朝为越溪女，暮作吴宫妃， 

贱日豈殊众？贵来方悟稀。 

邀人传脂粉，不自著蘿衣。 

君宠益骄態，君憐无是非。 

当时演纱伴，莫得同车归。 

持谢鄰家子，郊颦安可希。

A lovely face 

is treasured by all under Heaven: 

Could Xi Shi remain long in lowliness? 

One morning, just a girl by Yue stream - 

The evening, a favorite in the Palace of Wu. 

In her penniless days, 

who distinguished her from the throng? 

When honours came, 

the whole region noticed her rarity. 

She sent for servants 

to powder and rouge her checks. 

Would not even fasten 

her fine silk dresses. 

Her Lords devotion increased her haughtiness. 

The Kings blind love knew no right or wrong. 

Girls who had washed yarn with her in the old days 

Could not accompany her in the royal chariot. 

Meekly she would plead with her neighbours daughters; 

"How can frowning help withoout beauty?"
