Package: libapache2-svn
Version: 1.1.3-1
Severity: normal

A recent upgrade caused my commits to fail for a day until I realized
what was going on. The message at the client was
svn: Commit failed (details follow):
svn: MKACTIVITY of
'/svn/!svn/act/48a528a5-b8ef-0310-9939-d2c23b6a7cc5': 500 Internal
Server Error (http://localhost:8000)
(client using ssh to tunnel to server).

The apache logs showed the slightly more informative
[Wed Feb 09 10:56:27 2005] [crit] [client 127.0.0.1] configuration error: couldn't perform authentication. AuthType not set!: /svn/!svn/act/de5d679f-b2ef-\
0310-b465-b74a39834e52

I think there may be two issues here:

1. The default apache .conf snippet has all the AuthType's commented
out, which apparently is an error. This may have been a deliberate
effort to force the installer to intervene in the file; if not,
perhaps you should enable one so it works out of the box. (Though it
probably needs a path anyway...).

2. Though I did eventually notice the permission change in the
changelog, you might want to make it more prominent, for example
making it a NEWS item, and/or have a configuration question for
upgraders. Even the README.Debian has no mention of this issue.

For the record, I solved the problem by deleting
/etc/apache2/mods-enabled's symlink to dav_svn.conf, thereby
reverting to my previous settings in conf.d/. I'm not sure if the
file there was originally created by the package or me.

I guess the intent now is to edit
/etc/apache2/mods-available/dav_svn.conf in place?

The severity is a compromise between the somewhat trivial nature of
the issues or fixes and the severity of the resulting problem, which
took the server out of action.

I won't be too offended if you write this all off as pilot error, but
I suspect other pilots might run into the same problem, so it would be
nice to avoid it.

Thanks.
