The test VM had a basic bullseye installation (only task "standard")
I upgraded it to bookworm via
apt full-upgrade
then installed MATE via
apt install task-mate-desktop slim
and selected slim as login manager.

You need to provide more specific instructions how this issue can be 
reproduced. Ideally by starting from a fresh, minimal installation.
