Maybe the vserver guest should try to provide a better (i.e. more host-like)
environment instead?  It should be providing a command line, to not do so is
broken.  It *will* reduce functionality of early userspace, as you noticed.

So, the vserver guest should be providing a /proc/cmdline.  Otherwise, how
are you supposed to boot a vserver in emergency or single-user mode, etc?
