Yes, it did, also grub came up and went on to load the kernel, the screen 
switched to black and that was it.

My boot here goes like this:

1. bios screen
2. grub menu with the Debian background with the rocket
3. press return on the first menu entry
4. screen switches to black only
5. "Loading, please wait..." apears
6. screen switches to black only without nothing on it
7. after a while the gdm login screen apears with the Debian
    background with the rocket

The machine went ''dead'' (probably doing a loooooong fsck) after point 6.
