I just switched to Pidgin. Wiped clean all Empathy-related dotfiles from my
home directory. Installed Pidgin. Configured my gmail account for Pidgin.
Looks like this:

http://daffy.nerius.com/temp/pidgin-configure.jpg

It worked well. Quit Pidgin. Restarted it. I get this indefinitely:

http://daffy.nerius.com/temp/pidgin-noconnect.jpg

Going to accounts in Pidgin, I see this:

http://daffy.nerius.com/temp/pidgin-xmpp.jpg

Its says "XMPP" where maybe it should say "Google Talk"? I don't know if that's the problem.

Anyhow, on Pidgin I have to recreate the Gtalk account every time if I want to connect.
When I close and reopen Pidgin the account won't connect unless I remove it and recreate it.

Maybe this is an issue with an underlying library that both Empathy and Pidgin are using to connect to Gtalk? Just a guess.

BTW this is Pidgin from Debian packages on Squeeze (testing).
